Budaejjigae

We've seen kopitiam Japanese food before, but here is kopitiam budaejjigae, run by a Korean family that got some media attention a few months ago (603 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5). I was a bit puzzled at first that they gave us rice in styrofoam boxes and kimchi bagged up to go even though we were eating on-site. Plus, serving budaejjigae without a portable stove underneath it just seemed weird.

But it was a lot better than I was expecting, with just the right amount of spiciness and saltiness, as well as an impressively velvety broth that was a pleasure to drink. And to be honest, a portable stove wasn't needed given that it still kept its temperature. You could taste some sugar in the kimchi, but it was still refreshing enough to devour quickly. I didn't think I'd say this when I first arrived, but I wouldn't mind coming back.
