The Traveling Hungryboy

Lyon is covered with casual working class restaurants called bouchons, largely serving the same staples. Having never been to Lyon before, I worried about whether I was stepping into a tourist trap or an honest local place, especially since this place didn't shut down in the afternoon and also had English on their menus (3 Place du Gouvernement, 04-7241-9958). But I came with a bunch of local culinary school graduates, so presumably they knew what they were doing.

Yes, the firm and mild saucisson sausage above was good, as were the potently dressed salad and nicely grilled leeks that came with it. But more memorable to me was just how down-to-earth these places are, with wine served from casks (no swirling of glasses here!) and just simple, hearty food. Actually, this was part of a broader food tour that included stops a bunch of small shops in Old Lyon, including a honey, chocolate, and praline place. There is just so much local variation in all of these that one can never stop exploring France, it seems.
